Day 1 of 31

Wisdom starts with God

The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge, but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:7

Talk about it

Yahweh is God's own name. To fear him means to know how great and good he is, to take him seriously and to want to obey him. That is where being wise begins: with God, before anything else.

Try it today

Before you eat today, thank God out loud for one thing he made.

Ask at dinner

What is something only God could make?

For the grown-up

“Fear” here is reverent awe, the respect that changes how we live, and it is the opening frame of the whole book (it comes back in 9:10). In Proverbs, wisdom begins with knowing God before it is ever about being clever. For a young child, “God is great and God is good, so we listen to him” carries the idea.
